Investigation into a Mother accused of killing her son

GARNER, N.C. – Garner police released more details Friday about their investigation into a mother accused of killing her son.

Police charged 23-year-old Sherita McNeil with murdering her toddler and hiding the body. She was arrested Thursday after investigators found her statements inconsistent with the medical examiner's report, which ruled that 19-month-old DeVarion Gross' death as homicide by violence.

Investigators say the boy's "significantly decomposed" body was found wrapped in a trash bag in a plastic bin inside his mother's home on Nov. 14. They say McNeil hid the body for about six weeks and used bleach to mask the smell.

"During those weeks, Ms. McNeil repeatedly lied to family, friends and others about her son's welfare and whereabouts," Garner Police Chief Tom Moss said.

Detective Christina Pappas said McNeil maintains that her son's death was an accident.

Pappas has been working the case since she heard of Gross' disappearance Nov. 7.

"In a homicide case, the victim can't tell you what happened,” Pappas said at a news conference Friday. “They speak to you through the evidence that's been left behind."

She said she tried to contact his mother several times. Police had also been out to their home on Spring Drive before in response to welfare check requests from others.

Officials also believe Gross suffered multiple injuries of violence in the months before his death.

Police are still waiting for the final report from the medical examiner's office to determine the exact cause of death.
