Fellow Austrian captive Natascha Kampusch offers her help

Natascha Kampusch yesterday offered to use her experience of being held as a sex slave for more than eight years to give emotional and financial help to cellar prisoners Elisabeth Fritzl and her family.

Kampusch, now 20, told a radio station: "I can imagine that it is very difficult both for the mother of the children as well as for the wife of the perpetrator to get through this."

Psychiatrist Max Friedrich, who treated Natascha after she escaped from her cellar prison in a house near Vienna, Austria, said the freed Fritzl children would have many problems to overcome.

He said: "Socially... they could not develop any sort of sense of community which they would get from going to school or playgroup."

Questions are now being asked about how the authorities and neighbours failed to notice anything unusual in the "house of horrors". The Oesterreich newspaper wrote in an editorial:
"The community of Amstetten should drown in shame."

Daily newspaper Der Standard wrote: "The whole country must ask itself what is really, fundamentally going wrong."
