Opening Statements Made in Nixzaliz Trial

JAY STREET (AP) --

Brooklyn prosecutors say the mother of 7-year-old Nixzmary Brown provoked her husband to beat the little girl — and then did nothing to stop it.

A second-degree murder trial got underway and opening statements were made yesterday in the for Nixzaliz Santiago. The death two years ago of her daughter, Nixzmary, hastened child welfare reforms.

A jury of 10 women and 2 men is hearing the case in Kings County Supreme Court, with Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Patricia Di Mango presiding.

Nixzmary's stepfather is serving 29 years in prison. Cesar Rodriguez dodged a murder conviction in February, but was convicted of a lesser manslaughter count.

Authorities say Nixzmary was beaten to death. But she also was so malnourished that she weighed only 36 pounds — about half the average weight for a girl her age.
