Former LA county worker gets 3 years in prison

LOS ANGELES—A former Los Angeles County worker who billed the county for child care she did not provide has been sentenced to three years in prison.
Josefina Belleza was also ordered Tuesday to pay more than $500,000 to the county.

Belleza was a program supervisor with the Department of Children and Family Services. She pleaded guilty to misappropriating public funds and tax fraud for creating files for nonexistent children whose child care was paid for by the county.

Deputy District Attorney Juliet Schmidt says Belleza and three other co-defendants who claimed to provide child care pocketed the county checks.

Schmidt says Belleza's assets, including her home, were seized when she was charged in December 2007. She also owes the state $44,000 in unpaid taxes.
