As officials said Friday night, former state Sen. Nancy Schaefer and her husband Bruce Schaefer of Habersham County apparently died as a result of a murder/suicide.Reading from a statement about to be released, Sheriff Joey Terrell said, “The ongoing investigation by the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office and the GBI into the deaths of Nancy and Bruce Schaefer indicate that Bruce Schaefer shot his wife once then turned the gun on himself.”

Family members discovered the couple’s bodies in the bedroom of their home in The Orchard near Turnerville shortly before 6 p.m. Friday.Terrell said a handgun was found near the body of Bruce Schaefer and that several letters written by him to family members were found in the home, including a suicide note.

Autopsies conducted by a GBI medical examiner today “determined that Mrs. Schaefer died from a single gunshot wound to the back and Mr. Schaefer died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

The investigation so far and the autopsy results have not uncovered any evidence to incident it is anything other than a murder/suicide.”Law enforcement officials believe Nancy Schaefer was asleep when she was shot, likely on Friday morning, Terrell said.

The Northeast Georgian: Breaking News

A funeral for former Georgia state Sen. Nancy Schaefer and her husband, Bruce Schaefer, will take place Wednesday after their deaths Friday in what authorities have said was a murder-suicide.

The family will receive friends Wednesday at the Ebenezer Baptist Church Family Life Center in Toccoa, Ga., from 9 a.m. until noon.

The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. in the sanctuary of Ebenezer Baptist Church on Rose Lane in Toccoa. A private family burial will follow.

Memorials may be made to the Athens Y Camp.

The Acree-Davis Funeral Home in Toccoa is in charge of the arrangements.

Investigators concluded that Bruce Schaefer, 74, shot his wife once in the back in the bedroom and then shot himself in the head, Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead said Saturdya in a prepared statement.

“We are grieving over this indescribable loss of our parents who we all adored,” the Schaefer family said in a statement. “Our parents were extremely loving and caring people who took great joy in helping those in need.”

Authorities believe Nancy Schaefer, 73, was asleep when she was shot, probably sometime Friday morning, Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell told The Times newspaper of Gainesville.

The sheriff said that “some financial problems were mentioned” in the notes left behind by Bruce Schaefer.

“That might have been one reason,” Terrell told the Gainesville newspaper.

Nancy Schaefer represented the 50th District, which includes Stephens County, in the state Senate from 2004 to 2008.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The Ace of Spades

Those familiar with this blog are use to seeing me rant about our fucked up system...

This post is nothing to do with our system, it's closer to home. You might want to skip it, cuz it's probably only gonna interest me, and let me get some shit off my mind... maybe.

I know everything happens for a reason, I also know that when it's happening we don't understand why it had to happen.

However, eventually it all begins to make more sense, kinda.

My ex partner and I spent seven years adoring each other like no other in both of our lives. Anyone that knew/knows us swore that they thought you needed to shoot one of us to separate the bond we had.

So why would I write that, who would give a shit?

I dunno who would give a shit but it gets interesting here. Out of what appeared to be nowhere things just quickly spiraled downhill with us. Nothing I said, nothing I proved, nothing I tried to explain was heard. Family and friends were destroying us and he refused to hear it.

Ok so you're probably thinking.. yeah and?

Well, things got so out of hand I moved out. Mind you we were 99% finished remodeling the apartment and I had been living there for over 5 years.

I ended up going back to my mothers house. She had my brother and his foster child living with them. My sister lived downstairs with my brother in law and their four kids.. "my four nephews."

I didn't have a good relationship with any of them, actually I had just begun speaking to my mother and sister after a five year stint where I didn't speak a word to either of 'em.

During those years my sister had two more kids, and my brother inherited a foster child.

So, needless to say... my nephews and my brother's foster child didn't really know me. Ehh it is what it is.

Anywho, my ex partner and I broke up last April.

I ended up here (at my mothers) for Mother's day last year. Because of our really screwed up mother daughter and or sister[s] relationships I don't think I've ever celebrated Mothers day with either of them.

Last year I was being taken out and I felt funny not inviting them, so I invited them to join us. Both my mother and sister were so excited. We took them to Little Italy in Manhattan. A cozy little place my ex partner and I had become regulars at.. outside dining, fantastic food~ great people watching, and very friendly and efficient staff.

We sat there and enjoyed our dinner, it was almost as if we all knew that would probably be our first and last Mothers day together.

Around Christmas time my mother began to complain of not feeling well. She claimed she was to weak to walk. By Valentines day she was to weak to stay awake. She spent most of her time in bed.

As the weeks went on she became.. umm I wanna say "jaundiced" (yellow) but maybe it was just pale.. very very pale.

In the beginning of March she began getting tested to see what the problem was. They got a few opinions, and the collective diagnosis was an Adrenal tumor that had spread to the lungs, or lung cancer that spread to the adrenial gland.

The Dr's decided to look deeper and had her go for Cat Scans and more blood work and a urinalysis. There was massive amounts of protein in her urine.

She sat me down at the end of February and reminded me that the women in our family are born on the 13th and die on April 1st (April fools day). Then she reminded me that April 1st is approaching us quickly. I told her that the whole
April 1st thing is probably just a coincidence.

As the days went on she became weaker and weaker, not anything like the woman she once was that reigned terror on me throughout my life. No this woman was weak, she couldn't burn a carpet if she tried, let along burn a kid anymore.

She had to be admitted.

In the last week she's had 3 blood transfusions, a biopsy, and is on Zanax plus blood pressure lowering pills, to reduce her 240 blood pressure. They found out that she has blockages everywhere and they're doing what they can to keep her alive long enough to get the results back from the biopsy.

I've made some new friends since I've been in Brooklyn, one of them wanted to read my "life cards" with a regular playing deck of cards.. ok fine whatever~ I'm always up for a good laugh.

Well what she had to say wasn't going to make me laugh.. no, not attall attall!

She said I'm the Ace of spades:

Ace of Spades

Card Devination - Ace of Spades

Arcana Arcanorum: The Playing-Card Oracle

The Cards of Life - Find Your Card!

Isn't it interesting that I'm here?

Lets just wait it out to see if the April 1st theory is a coincidence or a reality!

Regulations sought for foster kids prescribed psychiatric drugs

Miami Herald
Regulations sought for foster kids prescribed psychiatric drugs
March 2, 2010

In the wake of a Broward child's death, state lawmakers will consider a bill designed to make it harder for child welfare workers to use mental health drugs to control foster kids.

Florida lawmakers will once again consider a measure to rein in the use of psychiatric drugs among foster children in the wake of last year's death of a 7-year-old Broward boy who was on a cocktail of mood-altering drugs.

A new bill, filed Friday by state Sen. Ronda Storms, a Brandon Republican, would, among other things, require that foster children assent to the use of psychiatric drugs. The proposed law would require caseworkers to explain to children, in a manner they can understand, why the drugs are necessary and what risks they carry.

``It's a huge step forward for the children of Florida,'' Robin Rosenberg, deputy director of Florida's Children First, said of the provision. ``It's integral to effective treatment for children to be involved at a developmentally appropriate level.''

The requirement that foster kids be involved in their own treatment was one of scores of recommendations made by a child welfare work group of administrators from the Department of Children & Families, doctors and children's advocates who studied the death of Gabriel Myers last April.

Gabriel, originally from Ohio, entered state care in June 2008 when his mother was found slumped in her car in a restaurant parking lot -- with a narcotic pill bottles surrounding her. Gabriel hanged himself on April 16, using a retractable shower cord as a noose.

In the aftermath, The Miami Herald reported that the boy had been prescribed several anti-psychotic and anti-depressant drugs in the months before his death. Most of the drugs have not been approved for use with children, and some have been linked to serious side effects, including an increased risk of suicide.

While Storm's bill tracks most of the work group's findings, it differs in some respects. One major difference: The work group wanted each child being administered psychotropic drugs to have the benefit of a lawyer at all court appearances.

Storms' bill requires the state to appoint guardians ad litem, or volunteer lay guardians. Storms said the guardians are qualified for the role because they already are involved in the children's lives.

Rosenberg, who was a member of the Gabriel Myers Work Group, said ``the work group concluded that attorneys are best suited to protect children's interests when prescribing medication,'' she said.

The bill would also:

• Prohibit children in state care from being involved in clinical trials designed to determine the safety or efficacy of drugs that have not yet been approved by the FDA.

• Require an independent medication review before psychiatric drugs can be administered to children 10 or younger.

• Require mental-health professionals to prepare an overall treatment plan, including the use of counseling and therapy, when children are prescribed psychiatric drugs.

``We want to give a preference to behavioral therapy,'' said Storms, the bill's sponsor. ``We're not going to just drug them through their childhood and adolescence.''

Storms said she thought the prescribing of such drugs has become a crutch for therapists, who are eschewing traditional couch chats with children. Research shows, she said, that some doctors are writing one prescription for a child every three minutes.

DCF administrators have supported the legislation, which marks the second time this decade that lawmakers have sought to crack down on mental-health drug use among kids in state care.

``With young kids, we really need to err on the side of caution,'' said DCF Secretary George Sheldon, who has supported both the work group and the legislation.

State Sen. Nan Rich, a Sunrise Democrat who is vice chair of the children's committee, said the bill will fail if lawmakers decline to set aside enough money to pay for it -- especially the provision that requires guardians for foster kids who are prescribed drugs.
