A jealous man used his infant son as bait so he could slit his ex-girlfriend's throat, the victim's mom said Wednesday.

Pedro Ayala, 21, asked Veronica Rivera, the mother of his 6-month-old son, to bring the child to his Jamaica, Queens, apartment Monday night because he had time off from his job at a bowling alley, Rivera's mother, Lucy Suarez, said.

"He knew she wasn't coming back to him," said Suarez, 51. "He asked her to bring the baby over to set her up. He killed my daughter."

Ayala stabbed Rivera, 32, to death in front of little Peter John Ayala and Natalie Rivera, her 9-year-old daughter from a previous marriage, police said.

"How are you going to leave me now?" he said as he killed her, sources said.
Ayala was charged with murder, aggravated contempt, weapon possession and child endangerment. He remained under police guard Tuesday at Queens Hospital Center, where he was being treated for a hand injury.

"He didn't want to see the baby," Suarez said. "He just wanted her. And if he couldn't have her, he was going to end her life."

Dear Lucy & Red,

I am so sorry to hear of this horrific and devastaing Tragedy.
I didn't know Veronica very well but I remember our last encounter and the thoughts I had as a result.
She had a beautiful smile. She was so sweet and friendly.

May you both find comfort in the loving memories you have and in knowing she will live on in the hearts of everyone who loved her.

Veronica,

May you rest in peace and in the loving presence of our heavenly father. We will all miss your heart and your beautiful smile.

With much love,
your cousin,
Maritza
