The Nixzaliz Santiago murder trial was put on hold Thursday, as lawyers waited for a judge to rule on whether or not a newspaper article could be entered as evidence.
The 2006 article cites a conversation between Santiago and her neighbor, in which she supposedly says she is a domestic violence victim.
The defense wanted to use the article to paint Santiago as a battered wife who was too victimized to intervene in the beating death of her seven-year-old daughter, Nixzmary Brown.
The prosecution said the article contains inaccuracies and wants it stricken from the record because the reporter no longer has notes from that day.
Defense lawyers did not want to proceed until a ruling was issued.
