Harlem Pastor Steps Aside Amid Abuse Allegations

NEW YORK

The Archdiocese of New York says a Harlem pastor has stepped aside after allegations of sexual abuse of a minor.

The archdiocese says in a statement posted on its Web site Sunday that it has directed The Rev. Monsignor Wallace Harris to relinquish his duties as pastor of St. Charles Borromeo Parish.

The archdiocese says Harris denied the allegations, which have been referred to the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.

The district attorney did not immediately return a call requesting information Sunday night. A message left for Harris at a residence in Harlem went unanswered.

Harris delivered an invocation at Gov. David Paterson's inauguration in March and served as the event coordinator for the pope's Sunday Mass in April.
