Rancho Cordova Man Shoots Female Neighbor Then Turns Gun on Himself

January 23, 2009 By Michelle Ventress Category: Crime, Top Story

Rancho Cordova apartments on Hirschfeld were evacuated Friday night after a gunman barricaded himself inside after shooting a female neighbor, Sacramento County sheriff’s officials said. Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran said a 28 year old man shot a woman in the shoulder with a small caliber handgun around 5:15 p.m. inside an apartment. The woman has been transported to a hospital with injuries that do not appear life-threatening. The male suspect refused to come out.

A police robot was sent into the apartment at 8:10 p.m. and the man’s body was found. The cause of death is believed to be a self-inflicted gun shot wound.

It is unclear at this time the relationship between the male suspect and the female victim. Neighbors say she was the mans’ downstairs neighbor and had threatened to report him to Child Protective Services for abusing his girlfriend’s children.

Neighbors said that the man had been abusing his children and the female neighbor was shot when she tried to intervene. Neighbors also say this wasn’t the first time the victim had called the police about the man. The man’s girlfriend and three children have been removed from the apartment.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department provides police services to Rancho Cordova under contract.
